Enter the weight and your current score for two known grade categories (like homework and tests), the weight of your final exam, and the overall grade you’re aiming for. The calculator works backward from your target to figure out exactly what score you need on the final.
The formula

Worked example
Category 1 is worth 20% of the grade and you’re averaging 90% in it. Category 2 is worth 50% and you’re averaging 80%. The final exam is worth 30%, and your target overall grade is 85%.
- Current weighted points: 20% x 90% + 50% x 80% = 18 + 40 = 58
- Points still needed: 85 - 58 = 27
- Score needed on the final: 27 / 30% x 100 = 90.0%

How do I find my category weights and current scores?
Check your course syllabus for the grading breakdown, which usually lists categories like homework, quizzes, tests, and the final exam along with their percentage weights. Your current score in each category is often visible in your school's gradebook system, or you can average your graded work by hand.
What if my class has more than two known grade categories before the final?
Combine categories into two groups before entering them here. Calculate a weighted average for each group (for example, merge homework and quizzes into one category), then enter the combined weight and combined score for each group, plus the final exam's separate weight.
What does it mean if the calculator says the target isn't achievable?
It means even a perfect 100% on the final would not be enough to reach your target grade, given your current scores and the final's weight. You'll need to either accept a lower overall grade, look for extra credit, or talk to your instructor about other ways to raise your grade.
What if I've already secured my target grade before taking the final?
If your known categories already add up to your target overall grade or more, the calculator shows that you've secured it, even with a 0% on the final. In practice you'll still want to take the final seriously, since most courses require it and a low score can still hurt other opportunities.
Does this calculator account for extra credit or curves?
No. It works from the weights and scores you enter, exactly as a standard weighted average. If your instructor applies a curve, drops a lowest grade, or offers extra credit, factor those into your category scores yourself before entering them here.
Can I use this for a final project instead of an exam?
Yes. The math is identical for any single remaining graded item, whether it's a final exam, a final project, or a capstone paper. Just enter that item's weight in place of the final exam weight, and its score requirement will be calculated the same way.
