How this calculator works
Enter your weight and walking pace, then either a duration or a step count. If you enter steps, this calculator first converts them to an estimated distance and duration (assuming an average stride length), then applies the same MET-based formula either way.
The formula
kcal = MET × weight(kg) × hours
Steps mode: distance(mi) = steps × 2.5ft ÷ 5,280ft/mi
hours = distance(mi) ÷ pace(mph)
MET values (Compendium of Physical Activities):
Slow (2.0 mph) = 2.8 · Moderate (3.0 mph) = 3.5
Brisk (3.5 mph) = 4.3 · Very brisk (4.5 mph) = 5.0
Worked example
Walking at a moderate pace (3.0 mph, MET 3.5) for 1 hour, at 70kg (154 lb):
- kcal = 3.5 × 70 × 1 = 245 kcal
For 10,000 steps at the same pace and weight: distance ≈ 4.73 miles, taking about 1.58 hours, for an estimated ≈387 kcal.

How many calories does walking 10,000 steps burn?
It depends on your weight and pace, but for someone around 154 lb (70 kg) walking at a moderate 3 mph pace, 10,000 steps works out to roughly 385-390 calories, based on an assumed average stride length. Heavier people and faster paces burn more.
Does walking speed really change how many calories I burn?
Yes, meaningfully: a brisk 3.5 mph pace burns noticeably more per hour than a slow 2.0 mph pace, because the MET (metabolic equivalent) value increases with intensity. Walking faster for the same duration burns more calories, even without changing the total time spent.
Why does this use an estimated stride length instead of my actual one?
Actual stride length varies by height, leg length, and gait, so a universal step-to-distance conversion is always an approximation. This calculator uses a commonly cited average of 2.5 feet per step. Enter your workout duration directly instead of steps if you want a more precise estimate.
Does body weight really matter this much for calorie burn?
Yes. The MET formula multiplies directly by body weight, since moving a heavier body takes more energy. Two people walking the same pace and duration but at different weights will burn meaningfully different amounts of energy.
Is walking as effective as running for burning calories?
Per minute, running generally burns more calories than walking because it has a higher MET value. But walking is lower-impact and more sustainable for longer durations, so total calories burned over a full workout can be more comparable than the per-minute rate suggests.
